Photograph Of Spotted Elk

Who is this man
pulse crunching cross my pillow
I hear him in the snow, right ear-side
in the stupor-stalked night.

Whose half-hearted keffel's desertion
in the dark digresses.

A frozen flag,
in black and white,
held spartan wrist – blank question mark –
of pixillated winter face.

keffel - an old or inferior horse
